Folder Colors

Give folders and smart filters a color so your sidebar is easier to scan — and move a folder under another one without recreating it.

Colors come from the same palette as tags. The folder icon itself takes the color (smart filters tint their orb), so you can tell folders apart at a glance.

Color a folder

  1. In the Clips sidebar, right-click a folder.
  2. Choose Color ▸ (at the bottom of the menu).
  3. Pick a color from the palette, or None to remove it.

The folder icon in the tree immediately takes that color. The same choice is available in Folder Properties (right-click → Properties → the collapsed Color row near the bottom).

Colors travel with your clips: they are kept in exports and backups.

Subfolders inherit the color

A subfolder without a color of its own shows the color of the nearest colored parent. That keeps a whole branch visually grouped from a single choice on the top folder.

If you want a subfolder to stay plain even though its parent has a color, open its Color ▸ menu (or Properties) and untick “Inherit parent color”. Pick a real color, or tick the box again, to go back to inheriting.

Smart filters

Smart filters (virtual folders) can be colored too — they tint their crystal-ball orb instead of a folder shape, so they stay distinguishable from regular folders.

Move a folder under another folder

Folders can be re-parented without recreating them:

  1. Right-click the folder → Properties.
  2. Set Parent folder to a top-level folder, or (top level) to move it out.
  3. Save.

Rules, mirrored from how folders nest elsewhere:

  • The target must be a top-level regular folder (one nesting level, as before).
  • A folder that already has subfolders of its own stays at the top level — move its subfolders out first. The field is disabled with a tooltip in that case.
  • The system Smart Filters container is never a target.

Smart filters can be moved the same way.

Edge cases & known limits

  • Removing a color with None on a subfolder falls back to the inherited parent color; use Inherit parent color (unticked) to force plain gray.
  • Only one nesting level is supported, so the Parent folder list shows top-level folders only.
  • Tag Colors — the same color palette for tags
  • Organization System — folders, smart filters and groups
  • Folder Archive — read-only (archived) folders
